General information

Hungary is one of the pearls of Central- Eastern Europe, located in the Carpathian Basin. It is bordered by Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. In terms of the country’s population, there are approximately 9,71 million people according to the latest (2021) measurements.

Its capital, with a population of around 1,757,600 (2015 survey data), has become one of the most popular destinations for European tourism in recent years. In 2019, the big city won the “European Best Destination” (EBD) award.

Hydrography

In terms of its hydrographic position, Hungary is home to the largest river in Central Europe, the Danube, as well as the second largest river in the country, Tisza, Lake Velence and Lake Balaton, also known as the Hungarian Sea. The latter is one of the hubs of the country’s summer tourism.

Country of thermal baths

Hungary is also known as the “country of thermal and medicinal waters” due to its vast amount of thermal water reserves. The country has a total of 1,290 natural thermal springs, making it the most densely populated country in the world with thermal baths. Its most famous thermal bath is the Hévíz Lake Bath, the largest medicinal warm water lake in Europe, with an average temperature of 24-25C even in winter.

Gastronomy

Hungarian gastronomy is an integral part of Hungarian culture, representing a world-famous standard and quality with a world of special and unique flavors. Its cuisine has gone through over more than 1,000 years of development. The ingredients of the traditional Hungarian dishes are meat, fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products, bread and honey. Hungarian cuisine is characterized by the rich taste of herbs, fruit soups, tender vegetables, hot noodles, tasty sauces, as well as the rich taste of beef, pork, lamb, poultry, fish and game dishes that can be prepared fried, steamed and cooked. The most famous traditional dishes are Goulash soup, Hortobágy meat pancakes, Chicken peppers, Casserole potatoes, Gypsy steak and many other dishes.
